BioGuiana.org: Promoting communication and collaboration among biologists in the Guiana Shield. BioGuiana is a rapidly growing community of biologists working in the Guiana Shield who recognize the logistical difficulties of working in this region. The uniquely pristine Guiana Shield holds great promise for biological study, yet this potential has not been realized due to the political and linguistic boundaries that fragment the area. Lines of communication within and among disciplines generally do not cross political boundaries, and thus the scope of most Guianan research to date has been geographically restricted, and thereby, of limited use in characterizing the Guianan biota. BioGuiana seeks to bring together this relatively small community of biologists to facilitate biological research in the Shield by increasing communication, collaboration, and reducing the duplication of effort.

http://bioguiana.org
  • offers free email accounts for students and researchers in the Guiana Shield
  • provides a free web page for students and researchers without such
  • will contain a list (with contact information) of biologists working in the region
  • will maintain a list of Guianan Shield-related publications
  • provide up to date information on biological news and happenings in the region
  • provides interactive resources
    • interactive maps of previous collecting effort (example)
    • interactive maps of planned trips (example)
